3/31/2014   Family was very important to the Romans. A man belonged to his family before his city-state. Some families joined together to form a clan. These clans where held together by a paterfamilias or "family father." The only person not completely under his power in the family was his wife if she was still under ther power of her paterfamilias. A wife was called a matron.
