most of the Egyptian civ. lived in a thin strip of fertile land where the Nile crosses the North African Desert

The Nile and the "Two Lands"

Egypt stretched along lower of the Nile's four-thousand mile course from central Africa to the Mediterranean sea

Two sections Upper and lower Egypt

Upper: narrow strip of fertile land 5 miles in length 12 miles in width North African desert
Lower: delta formed by the Nile in the last hundred miles before it reaches the sea

"Gift of the Nile" tides flooding and receding making ground rich soil
