Fear of muslims in southern Europe spur many to become Christians
520 AD - Benadict wrote the rules for monks and monasteries
His sister Scholastica did the same for nuns in convents
731 AD - the Venerable Bede wrote a killer history of England
Monks opened schools, maintained libraries and copied books (Bible, Greek, texts)

By 800s French, Spanish, and Roman based languages evolved from Latin (Romantic Languages)
instead of one massive Government it becomes local governments
Franks lived on Roman province of Gaul - Their leader is Clovis
Clovis has a christian god epiphany and he converts to Christianity
Clovis (GOV) + Church(MONEY/RELIGION) = BIG ALLIANCE

a political, military, and economic based land holding and protective alliance

Knights (received fiefs for defending their lords land)
Peasants (mostly surfs)
Manor - The lords estate
-The Lords manor house
-a church
-Some work shops
-15-30 families
-all on a few square miles
Good news- it is self sufficient
Bad news its harsh if you're a peasant
Peasants are poor and pay high taxes
-tax on grains
-tax on marriage
-church tax (Tithe - 10% of income to go to church)
Lived in crowded cottages
Lived with animals and insects
Eat VERY simple
-don't worry the church says its your lot in life
-God determined your place in society
